As much as we love our grannies, advice from grandmothers about dealing with the flu are ‘out’! High Tech advice from the Web is ‘in’. I know your granny told you to drink honey and milk and rest. Resting is still the best thing to do when you don’t feel well – when this weak feeling is coming over you. Sometimes in this world we can’t afford to just crawl into bed. In this case, you don’t have the time to follow grannies advice, so I have some 21st century suggestions for you:
1. Increase your warmth and well being with an electric blanket this winter season. It prevents you from freezing in the night and keeps you warm. In addition, when you only use electricity for the blanket and don’t heat the entire house, you will save energy as well.
2. Increase your in take of vitamins and supplements. Vitamin C is especially important because it energizes you and strengthens your immune system. The purple cone flower, otherwise known as Echinacea is a herbal remedy since centuries and helps you to fight the common flu. In our time you just have to walk into a drugstore and purchase the supplements, you don’t have to collect the flowers.
3. Ok, this tip is really not high tech, but there are just some things which don’t ever change and that is the need of water. Drink loads of water. Roughly 8 glasses a day would help to flush out the cold. These days we have an amazing amount of bottled water which all tastes different. Just have a bottle with you at all times, it will remind you to drink even when you’re not thirsty.
4. Bacteria and germs are the little buggers which are sitting everywhere and they make us sick. Make sure you clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant spray to avoid bacteria to spread and walk all over the place. Hand sanitiser also prevents germs from spreading from your hands.
5. Get enough exercise. Even when you just slightly feel bad, get onto your home treadmill and have an easy workout, it will help your immune system to get stronger. You can monitor your performance with a heart rate monitor to make sure you are not over doing it.
6. Coming home after a long day, often hands and feet are just cold. Instead of filling a water bottle and taking it to bed, what about just heat up microwavable hand and feed warmers. This is a easy way to get warm quickly.
7. Take your mind off of things, don’t panic! What about cuddling up on your sofa and just spending time with yourself. Watch your favourite movie on a nice big LCD television and enjoy. The twilight zone will just settle around you.
8. Fresh lemon and oranges are still the best way to get the valuable vitamin Cs. This has not chang
ed since your grandmother’s time. However, these days we don’t use a press anymore, try a hand held blender to catch all the valuable juice. It’s also great for making quick soups to keep you warm from the inside.
9. If you think you have a temperature, rather make sure and check. You can get a great infrared thermometer. It reads temperatures in seconds and you can decide whether a visit to the doctor should be considered. This is especially useful for little kids as they don’t like to hold still when they are not feeling well.
10. Yoga meditation is certainly a new trend and was not around when your granny gathered her wisdom. In the past it was called ‘time out’ and ‘get rest’. Today we call it meditation. Gain consciousness and relax at the same time. There are great yoga meditation accessories to help you relax and gain strength.
Wishing you a happy winter with little disruption from colds or flues.
