This year is going to be a special New Year’s Eve. We are leaving the two zeros behind and we are moving into the teens of the 20s . Yes you are right, the teens. It is almost as special as moving from 1999 to 2000, well, almost. Do you have any plans to celebrate the welcoming of the new year?
Many people do not think of the New Year’s Eve party before Christmas and many plan a spontaneous party with friends or family. The spontaneous parties are anyway the best. But, we have a few ideas for this year, which are maybe a bit different. With small parties you often have the problem that you need to kill the time between dinner and 12 o’clock. Here are some ideas on how you can skip the traditional board games and move onto some different ideas.
Firstly, I believe food is still very important. Either do a pot luck and display the food on a glass dining table. If it’s a small group, you can organise a fancy sit down dinner to add some flavour to the party.
Ask your guests to come in fancy dress.
Have you heard of a projector party? Invite a few of your closest friends. Everyone has to bring a short power point slight show of their year 2009. Have a nice dinner in buffet style and then, review the year 2009. All you need is a projector to project the amazing images on a big white wall. With a nice glass of wine, go on a time journey of 2009. 12 o’clock will come much faster than you think. In a way its nice to catch up with friends and family and hear what their aspirations are for next year.
When you still want to do a “traditional party”, you can spice it up by interviewing every guest about what that person thought about last year and what their dreams are for 2010. Catch this all on a digital camcorder and an hour before 12 o’clock relay it on your 50″ plasma TV. This gives everyone a nice start into the new year and a good laugh : ).
You could also, kill the time leading up to 12′clock by improvising a new “Dinner for 1″ sketch with your friends. Motivate your friends to come up with an improvised character of Miss Sophie and her friends Mr. Pommeroy, Mr. Winterbottom, Sir. Toby, and Admiral von Schneider. Record the show on a digital camcorder and play it back on a high definition DVD player. I promise you, this year will be different. I mean how often can you watch this sketch. Change it a bit and make it more interesting. I am sure your friends will come up with crazy ideas and characters. I am sure you will get many clicks when you upload it on YouTube later.
Did you know…?
The Romans celebrated the New Year in late March, but soon the calender became synchronized with the sun. The Roman senate (153 BC) declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. Julius Caesar (46 BC) established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. For the very first of January 1st to be the beginning of the New Year, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.
