Is one of your New Year’s Resolutions to work more from home to save commuting and to cut carbon emissions? Then you either already have a home office or you are in the middle of planning one. For those of you in the latter case I put together a little check list of things you should consider when building your own office:
- The home office should be in it’s own room or part of your house/apartment. If you use your kitchen or living room table as a work desk you will be tempted to turn on your TV or read a book at work.
- Choose a place that has enough light so your eyes won’t get tired too fast. Also, choose a quiet location in your home to be able to concentrate while working.
- Set up a telephone line next to your work desk so you can easily make calls. Philips Fax Machines house a telephone and fax machine in one device so you can save space in your home office. You will find out that even in internet times a fax machine can be very helpful to sign and receive contracts immediately.

- Set up all the necessary equipment at once to avoid later refurnishing: a laptop or desktop computer, (wireless) keyboard, mouse and printer are a must. Make sure to also think about small devices such as a dictation machine. If you have an idea you don’t want to forget but nothing to write on, just save your thoughts on it and write them down later.
- Get a professional black leather office chair and not just any chair. As you plan on spending most of the time at the desk it should be a comfortable chair that doesn’t put pressure on your spine. You have the right height of the chair when your forearms and hands are horizontal to the desk and not bent when you are writing on your keyboard.
- One more important thing that you should consider when planning your home office is storage. You will need shelves and drawers for all your folders and documents.
Did you know…?
Laser printers are a great buy for home offices. They have considerably decreased in price and increased in performance so they are superior to inkjet printers.
