Style Tip of the Week: Dark Skinny Jeans

Dark skinnDark Skinny Jeansy jeans are a wardrobe must-have. I’m not just saying it because I personally love them. I’m saying it because it’s the law. Don’t let the fashion police catch you without a pair in your closet.

Victoria Beckham has said that her favourite casual outfit is a pair of dark skinny jeans and heels. Young Hollywood has been seen rockin’ the same trend and it seems that dark skinny jeans have even spread to men’s wardrobes. Skinny jeans are everywhere, but the problem with skinny jeans are that they’re well…skinny. They’re naturally hard to squeeze into and it’s even harder to find a pair that you actually love wearing.

My own personal foray into skinny jeans has left me with some tips that I know some of you will find helpful.

1) Brand Names

I hate to say it but the best skinny jeans I’ve ever worn were from pricey brand names. Sure, you can luck out and find yourself a pair of cheap skinny jeans, but chances are the materials won’t hold up over time and finding the perfect pair will be time consuming. If you have the time though, by all means, rifle through generic brands. You might just find a diamond in the rough. But if you want to save yourselves the hassle of having to try one several pairs of jeans, go for the name brands.

Before buying skinny jeans, generic or not, I recommend trying on expensive name brand jeans beforehand. You’ll be able to get an idea of what kind of fit you should be looking for, how it should feel and what it should look like. My favourite brands are Lucky Brand Jeans, True Religion and Seven Jeans–all of which are extremely pricey. I often try and buy name brand jeans that are out of season or I shop at discount stores that offer designer jeans for a more affordable price. That’s worked well for me in the past and it’s helped me become a skinny jeans addict today.

Dark Skinny Jeans2) Fit

Most importantly, regardless of whether or not you’re purchasing designer jeans or generic ones, make sure you know what you’re desired fit is. Take a tape measurer and find out your true waist size and leg length. Don’t try and suck it in either, you’ll want to invest in jeans that fit perfectly. Sucking it in will cause you to buy jeans that are too small for your waist, and that’s just a waste of money. Find out if you’ll need long or short jeans. Knowing your waist size, and desired length of your jeans is the first important step to finding your perfect pair.

Your back pocket design is also an integral deciding factor on whether or not these jeans will fit you well. Oversized pockets are great for smaller bums. They make your behind look perkier. Smaller back pockets do the opposite and can help make your bum look flatter and smaller for women with larger seats. Back pockets with designs and embellishments bring attention to your behind and are great for women with flat bums because it can cause an illusion of a rounder, fuller backside. At the same time, women with fuller behinds will want to stay away from embellishments as it can make you look more rounder than you expect.

If you’ve ever had a pair of favourite jeans in the past, you’ll know just how special it feels to wear them. I hope these tips will help you find your perfect pair in the future.
