The bathroom is one of the most design sensitive rooms in the house. Designed right, the bathroom can be a sanctuary of rest and relaxation. The bathroom can be a reinvigorating room to start your morning in, if you take time to design a bathroom just right. Here are 5 affordable tips (we’re not talking about remodelling, here) to inject some modern style into your bathroom.

1. Lighting

Check your bulbs. Old bulbs will give off a dingy glow that can make your bathroom feel grimy and uncomfortable. Stark, white lighting can be equally uncomfortable in a bathroom and can feel like a sterile laboratory. What designers often choose is lighting that fits right in the middle–soft light that illuminates the room, just enough–not too much and not too little. A great way to find the best kind of lighting for your bathroom is having enough light so that there are no shadows, but not bright enough to cause glare.

2. Colour

A little known fact is that your bathroom’s colour affects how you look in the mirror. The colour reflects off of your skin, so if you choose colours like yellow or green as they can make you look older and are unflattering, especially when you’re putting on make up. You’ll end up applying too much in an effort to conceal your bathroom’s colour reflected off our face. The best colours for a bathroom are warm tones which cast warm shadows on your face. Warm colours like rose or peach is flattering for all skin types. I personally prefer light, warm shades of beige, browns and tans.

Another great option is to paint your bathroom calming spa colours–soothing blues are a popular choice. Ultimately, make sure you choose a colour that’s calming and suits your style.

3. Utilise Storage

Make sure you declutter your bathroom. Unlike all other room in your home, having any kind of décor beside the bare necessities tends to hurt a bathroom’s overall design. Definitely use the storage you have in your bathroom–organize cabinets and make room for all your essentials and throw out anything that you’re not planning on using that can be taking up space. Clear up counter and sink space. Sometimes clearing out items on your bathroom counter can do more for your ‘redesign’ than all else.

4. Choose the Right Decor

Next, make an effort to buy only essential items. Essentials for a bathroom typically include a toothbrush holder, a rubbish bin and a soap dispenser or dish. A new trend is replacing a toothbrush with a toothbrush sanitizer which sanitizes your toothbrush using UV light throughout the day. A few other pieces of décor won’t hurt, but be sure to keep your décor pieces to a minimum of three. Most designers shy away from adding more than three pieces of functionless décor to a bathroom. A couple modern pieces of décor that are popular at the moment are plants and freestanding toilet roll holders.

Bamboo is a popular plant that a lot of people use in their bathrooms. The plant can stand humidity and steam and can easily grow in a bathroom’s damp environment. It’s long, slender form keeps it from taking up too much space. Spicing up your bathroom with exotic plants gives it a luxurious and exotic flair that definitely affects the ambiance of the room. A freestanding toilet roll holder is another piece of decor that is  very modern and in at the moment. It makes changing toilet rolls a lot simpler and it looks great because it adds a luxurious feel to any bathroom.

Another useful tip: buy a metal shower head and bamboo decor. These items look extremely modern and stylish but also serve a highly practical function. Metal shower heads have been proven to be healthier for you–plastic shower heads tend to trap harmful bacteria and allow them to breed much easier. Scientists have found that metal shower heads stay much cleaner for a longer period of time. They’re also easier to clean if you start to see lime build up on them.

Bamboo is extremely trendy at the moment–it’s soft, light wood finish has a uniquely warm and modern feel to it. It’s also extremely eco-friendly and sustainable. It also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties making it incredibly hygienic for your bathroom. But if you don’t like the look of wood in your bathroom, stainless steel or chrome décor is preferable because they’re easy to clean and look amazing.

5. Scentual Smells

Adding a comforting scent to a bathroom is essentially the cherry on the top. Fresh scents are absolutely essential for a bathroom. Scent diffusers use reeds to infuse bathroom with amazing scents. These look very contemporary and are very popular at the moment as well. They come in a variety of scents and you really can’t go wrong with a scent diffuser. The added benefit is that they come with reeds, a small glass holder that’s typically filled with liquid and look amazing in any style of bathroom.
