With summer coming up, it’s time to update your wardrobe. Some trends are quite obvious: leave burgundy and mustard yellow for what they are and wrap yourself in orange, aqua or sunny yellow; ditch the leopard prints and go floral; exchange your wool tights for an airy maxi dress or a flirty skirt; and swap your boots for flat sandals or a pair of peep-toe wedges. But it doesn’t end there. Beware of the faux pas of combining your summery outfit with the wrong accessories. Bold, colourful necklaces and bracelets were popular in the autumn and winter of 2009/2010. Designers came up with chunky, asymmetrical necklaces and elaborate chandelier earrings. Mixed metals were very fashionable, as the prime example of this trend was Kenneth Jay Lane’s pebble necklace, which is made of 22K gold plated beads that are made to look like polished river stones. The latest word, however, is that you’ll only need a few valuable, more refined accessories this spring and summer. A useful rule of thumb for combining fashion items is that you should never combine several seasons in one outfit.
For example, you shouldn’t wear flip flops with jeans and a thick jumper. In the same manner, the chunky mixed metal necklace that looked awesome on your cashmere sweater will clash with a light summer dress – especially if it features burgundy glass beads. Belts, brooches and chunky glass rings are the height of fashion this summer, but work best in moderation. You can still get away with wearing yellow metal if gold has always been your colour, but true trendsetters will emphasize on pearls, silver choker necklaces with crosses and antique silver bangle bracelets. Fortunately for those who just splurged on a layered necklace that’s rather heavy on the gold but prefer to follow the latest fashion trends, it’s easy to sell the necklace that was fashionable last season online. Even if your treasures are damaged or don’t do very well on eBay, there are plenty of gold buying websites that purchase jewellery for its melt value. The great advantage of getting cash for gold jewellery you’re not wearing is that it will increase your budget, so that you can buy the items that do match with your summer outfit.
Did you know?
This summer’s fashion accessory trend is wearing just a few, valuable and refined accessories with your outfit. Last year, chunky jewellery was all the rage, but it seems that trend hasn’t carried on through 2010.
