Turn your Garden into a green Paradise

Hi Shopaholic Team,

In the summer I love spending time in my garden. Recently, I read about organic gardening but I’m not entirely sure what that means. Could you please give me some instructions how I could do that?

Thanks.

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks again for your question. In principle, organic gardening is to grow crops without using man-made chemicals and fertilisers. To enjoy the beauty of your flowers and plants in an eco-friendly way, you can do a lot of things.

Healthy plants need good soil. To improve your soil, take leaf mould and garden compost and dig it into the soil. Spreading it across the surface is another option. So the drainage of heavy soils is improved. It also helps dry soil to hold onto moisture and nutrients. You can even make your own compost by using a wooden composter.

A mixture of green and brown materials will be turned into nutrient-rich compost.

To avoid pests, choose naturally disease resistant plant varieties if possible. Plants should also suit your site and soil. Another option would be crop rotation. By changing the position of your vegetable each year, it will be much easier to prevent diseases in the soil. You can also grow plants that have a strong scent right next to your vegetables. Because of the scent, pests get confused and are attracted away.

These are just some tips how to turn your garden into a “green” paradise. Even if it sometimes doesn’t look perfect, it’s the peace of mind you‘ll get from your organic garden. Enjoy it!
