Where you apply your make up and lighting have a lot to do with how you appear in the mirror and thus influence how much, how little or what shades you choose to use on your face. There are also accessories that can make a huge difference in the quality of your make up application. They can help speed up the amount of time needed to apply make up and they are also healthier for your face.

1. If you put make up on in the bathroom, make sure the paint colour doesn’t reflect unflatteringly on your face. Shades of yellow, green and grey can have a very unflattering effect when you look into the mirror. If repainting your bathroom doesn’t sound appealing to you, do your make up in another room, preferably one with plenty of natural light or one that isn’t painted harsh colours. Shades to avoid: yellow, orange, grey and other extremely bright or harsh shades. Choose warmer tones that’ll flatter your look and allow you to properly know how much make up to apply. Peaches, pinks and shades of warm rose are best for the skin but many people would hate to paint their walls such a colour. If you are averse to having a pink bathroom, go with other neutral warm tones such as shades of beige, cream and tan.

Illuminated Bathroom Mirror2. Illuminated bathroom mirrors are a must have. If you’ve ever owned one before, you probably know it’s nearly impossible to live without one after experiencing how much easier it is to apply make up. Illuminated bathroom mirrors light up your face equally so you can properly see what areas of your face need touching up. It eliminates shadows from the face which can often impede proper make up application. Plucking your eyebrows is also much faster and easier as you can see stray hairs much more quickly. Refitting your bathroom with an illuminated mirror might be pricey, but a much more affordable option is to simply buy a portable illuminated mirrors. Their cheaper and they offer the same effect as a mounted illuminated bathroom mirror.

Illuminated Mirror3. Focus more on healthier skin and less on touching up imperfections. Proper diet, exercise and sleep are all important contributors to skin health. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things you can do to make your face look great. Be sure to wear proper sunscreen if you’re expecting to be out in the sun for a considerable amount of time. Eating plenty of fruits and drinking plenty of water is perhaps on of the best things you can do for your face as fruits are full of antioxidants which slow the ageing process and keeps your face healthy and supple. Water also helps clear toxins out of your body and helps to keep your face blemish free.

Another thing to remember is that make up, especially brushes and eye and lip make up, is a breeding ground for bacteria. You should throw out old lipsticks, eye-liners, mascaras and brushes regularly–at least every 6 months. Using old products can lead to pimples and other blemishes and is just not healthy for your face. You can even replace old make up brushes with an antibacterial make up brush, if you prefer.

Take these lesser known make up secrets, mix with the proper cosmetics and voila! You’ll have a shining new look and a healthier new you!

Did you know?

You should replace your mascara every 3 months. Mascara is one of the most easiest cosmetic items for bacteria to grow rapidly, and throwing out your mascara every 3 months can help prevent bacterial eye infections.
