Make the most of autumn’s outdoors on lightweight bikes

lightweight bikesIt’s September and that means its autumn—time to get outdoors for that last fling before hibernating! Get yourself onto your bike and hit the trails to crunch leaves and dine alfresco on what this season has to offer. If you’re lacking a bicycle, or if you’re just about tired of that rusted bit of metal you own, make sure you take a look at some lightweight bikes (buy one, do it). Even if you decide you’re going to take a nice tour of the neighbourhood and forgo cross-country cycle training this year, you’ll notice the benefits of a lighter bike if you hit any type of incline. The lighter the better.

Around this time, I like to hop onto a mountain bike. I mean, it’s not as if I’m a mountain biker, but I’m insecure and I like to cover all my bases. I can take one through sand, soft mud, down trails, and then up the road just like a street bike. That has to make it superior right? They also tend to be indestructible, and that matters quite a lot to someone who falls off, tips over, and kicks his bike around (usually in that order; usually in correlation to how muddy it is outside).

boardman mountain bikeIf you do identify yourself as an actual mountain biker, and fresh air, mud in your face, and slogging up hills for a quick downhill blast makes all your body parts giddy, consider investing in a Boardman mountain bike. The company was founded by an Olympic medal winning, Tour de France Yellow Jersey wearing, biking Superman. The actual bikes they’ve designed have been used to win Olympic gold! Many of their bikes feature light aluminum frames and they cater to all skill levels.

If you simply want a mountain bike and don’t plan on winning the Olympics, have a look at an Apollo mountain bike. They are Halfords’ own brand of bike and tend to be lower in price than the Boardman bikes. Considering the amount of damage I do to my bikes, the price factor lowers the amount of pressure on me to keep it in good condition. Whichever bike you go with –jump on and enjoy what you can, when you can, for as long as you can until winter.

Did you know?

Chris Boardman has broken the world hour record three times and has worn the yellow jersey (separately) three times at the Tour de France.
