A throne for your telly

Let’s face it – your new 55” HD TV looks great, but that styrofoam box you’re using as a TV stand is really cramping your style.  Don’t sweat it.  By adding a quality TV and DVD storage cabinet to your entertainment center, you can be entertaining in style in no time.

There are some things in your home, like that antique sword you bought in Barcelona, that you want to display in the open.  Sadly, your DVD collection is not one of them (no matter how many Scorsese movies you own).  TV cabinets with doors, like the one pictured at left, offer plenty of space for storage in one neat package.  These cabinets will allow you to stow your DVD or Blu-ray player, as well as any cable boxes or video game systems you may own, and also do a fine job of hiding the many electrical cords that emanate from such products.  Of course, if you find that your movie collection is simply too large to fit alongside your appliances, you can always supplement your TV stand with a standalone DVD storage cabinet.  Such cabinets come in all shapes and sizes, but I prefer a taller unit that allows me to store both my DVDs and CDs so that all of my media can be found in one location.

TV cabinets can be found in a number of materials, and what you choose will depend on your preferences.  Steel or metal constructions are nice for a sparser, urban space, but for my money there’s nothing better than a solidly built wood cabinet.  Oak TV furniture tends to be long-lasting and can provide a solid base for heavier sets, although you may want to consider staining the wood should it contrast with the rest of your décor.  I personally enjoy cabinets in a darker shade of cherry wood, which add just the right touch of class to a room while allowing the real focal piece – the TV – to steal the show.

What do you use to support your telly?

Did you know?

Due to their rudimentary design and large number of components, early televisions were built into their own cabinets and acted as standalone pieces of furniture.
