When it comes to snowboarding, looking good is half the challenge. Whether you’re a novice or a card carrying member of the gnar-shredding society, it’s important to have the freshest gear before hitting the slopes. Lace up your boots and grab your Burton snowboards – we’re looking at the coolest boarding gear for winter 2011.
Many people will (rightfully) argue that good boots are the most important piece of gear you can own, but few would argue that a hot jacket is most likely to get you noticed. Costa Mesa, California clothier Volcom has been turning out slick snowboard jackets with bold colourways for nearly two decades, and this year’s crop is no exception. The Volcom 2011 line showcases zone-specific insulated GORE-TEX jackets, 1980s-style pullovers, and some sick fleece hoodies to sport in the lodge. One of my favourites is the Blast Volcom Snowboard Jacket pictured here, which features a zip tech pant to jacket interface, handy goggle clips, and some extra snug brushed tricot lined hand warmer pockets.
Perhaps the smartest thing you can do for yourself this snowboard season is to buy a quality helmet. I myself waffled on making this purchase a few years back, and within minutes after I caved I evaded a sure concussion and was glad that I did. I went with a helmet from Giro, the worldwide leader in protective gear for cycling, snowboard, and skiing, and maker of some very fashionable landing pads for your dome. A Giro helmet like the one at left will allow you to board freely even in the iciest of conditions, and is likely to earn you a spot on any mountain’s best-dressed list.
