A move toward masculine bedding

Let me get this straight: You’ve got the bachelor pad – the slick outdoor kitchen, the poker table, the great HD TV with surround sound – but you still haven’t updated your old Man U bedspread?  Believe me when I say that nothing squashes your game quicker than a bed that looks like it’s been inhabited by a twelve-year-old, but fortunately,  you can still change your outlook today.  Men’s bedding should be about simplicity and comfort – not dainty throw pillows and your grandmother’s fitted bedspreads – which is why we at Shopaholic are armed and ready to help you strip away the fluff and find a bedding solution that’s right for you.

Option 1: clean and airy

seersucker duvet coverWhen searching for masculine coverings for your bed, you’re likely to find that while materials are relatively uniform (lamb’s wool for shams, cotton flannel and linen for sheets), there’s going to be some flexibility when it comes to look and colour.  If you’re like me and you favour clean lines and peaceful, relaxing tones, you’d be wise to consider picking up a seersucker duvet cover.  The alternating blue and white strips of the duvet evoke images of calming maritime scenes perfect for any wannabe seafarer, while the thin, all-cotton fabric keeps you cool and comfy as you sleep.  Many people consider this to be a spring and summer only fabric, but I find that will the right combination of sheets, seersucker can make for great sleep all year round.

Option 2: rich and warm

John Lewis throwMore commonly associated with the masculine ideal, rich colours such as chestnut and taupe also look fantastic in any man’s bedroom.  Chestnut in particular, which reminds this writer of the terracotta rooftops of Venice, has a really special quality that will make your bed glow and your company shine even brighter.  The key here is to avoid shades that are too light or ambiguous (pink bedding is a definite no-no) in favour of darker, earthy tones.  A warm-coloured duvet and bedcover, coupled with equally cozy sateen or silk sheets, will create for you a sexy sleep space worthy of the cool bachelor pad that surrounds it.

Did you know?

Each year on the second or third Thursday of June, US senators celebrate Seersucker Thursday by donning the lightweight fabric in recognition of traditional Southern charm and clothing.
