One that matters: The hybrid bicycle

Sure you might own a collection of flashy lightweight bikes by Cervello or Orbea that impress your weekend riding buddies, but are they really all that practical for everyday use? When it comes to getting around or making a quick dash to the super market, a commuter bike is a must have. Luckily, now is a great time to find some wonderful deals on 2010 hybrid bikes.

While a performance road bike is built for speed and to weigh as little as possible, hybrid bikes are designed to be practical and functional. They feature things such as chain guards, fenders to keep mud and dirt off your person, and racks to carry things.

Essentially it is a cross between a road bike and mountain bike, and is ideal for riding in the city or recreationally on bike trails. A hybrid bike borrows certain design elements from mountain bikes such as an upright frame for a more comfortable ride, a sturdy frame to withstand the rigors of riding over pot holes and rough roads, and tires with more width for added traction.

Since it is not entirely designed for aggressive trail riding, it also has the luxury of taking some useful features from a road bike, including lighter weight rims and taller gears for increased speed.

When buying a hybrid, I would look into how often you are going to be riding. If this is a bike you will use rather regularly, it might be worth it to spring the cash for higher quality. Generally, most manufacturers make relatively similar frames, and the big difference will be found in the components. Higher end breaks and gears will last longer and perform better.

Proper fit is also extremely important when purchasing a bike. Although you can adjust the seat, if the frame doesn’t fit you’re going to strain your arms and back because the seat won’t be optimized to match your handle bars. Proper bike fitting is also important to be seated in the best position to have control over your bike.

Also, make sure you pick up the essential accessories. I don’t advise riding without a proper bike helmet. A small kit to repair flats, as well as spare tube and a bike pump should also be part of your check list.

Did you know?
In 2008, German Gunter Mai debut the world’s lightest ever road bike, weighing in at 3.2kg. He later tuned the weight down to 2.8kg and logged an impressive 20,000km on the bike.
