Although a christening is a religious ceremony, many people never think of giving a religious gift. So when you think about giving a religious present, the first thing to come to mind is to give a copy of the Holy Bible. In fact, at a friend’s child’s christening, she actually received four Bibles; one came from the godparents and three from family friends.

However, tradition dictates that only close family members give a copy of the Bible to the newly-christened child. So if the family is conservative – or just wants to keep things traditional – you might want to consider giving something else like a silver cross, or anything with an engraved Bible quote.  This way there’s still religious symbolism in your gift.

Silver is Always Classic – for people who appreciate tradition

Another very good option – and one that has stood the test of time – is giving something made of silver. Today your options are not limited to just a silver spoon or a silver christening mug. While these are fine gifts in their own right, don’t overlook some recently popular options such as silver-plated photo frames; these are great gifts because they are both classy and useful. The same can be said of a silver box for baby teeth. Silver jewellery is another classic gift and is sure to be well-received.

Some Unique Ideas – for the less traditionally-minded people

If you are looking to really give a unique gift you’ve got several options. Naming a star after the baby, or even purchasing a plot on the moon for him or her, are both possible. It’s all done with a kit and includes a registered certificate to prove it. Donating to a charity in the child’s name has become a popular option as well. This is a good choice for a socially-conscious family who will appreciate the thought you put into it. And of course, giving the newly-christened child money or gift vouchers is very practical. A six-month-old baby doesn’t have much need for money now. But years down the road, your gift of a savings account can be very valuable.
