The forgotten five uni essentials

bottle openerThough university is now behind me, how easily I recall those monumental days leading up to the big move. The memories flood back when I see parents and teens wandering the aisles of a superstore loading their cart with shampoo, bed sheets, a desk lamp, and notebooks. While the packing list seems straightforward, there are bound to be some essentials that are left behind. You’ll need a little more than your clothes, your computer, bedding, and toiletries! So, here are the “Forgotten Five”…five items most university students forget and wish they wouldn’t have.

1. A Toiletry Tote – At home you may have had the convenience of a private bath, but this is residence hall living! You’ll most likely be sharing your bathroom with a whole floor of people, and it might take a good walk to get there. You won’t want to leave your items in the bathroom, for fear of someone else swiping them. But, trying to carry everything in your arms will be cumbersome, inevitably resulting in a bottle or two tumbling to the floor. A large toiletry bag or plastic basket of some sort is perfect for containing your shampoo, conditioner, razor, body wash, toothpaste, and all those other goodies you require.

2. Shower Shoes- Along the same vein of thought, this isn’t your own bath anymore! Grime and who knows what else may be lingering on that shower floor…yuck! You’ll definitely want some flip flops or other shoes designated specifically for your trips to the shower. You’ll probably wear them en route to the bathroom and all the while you’re in the shower too. These are a definite must-have!

3. A Can Opener – Chances are you won’t eat in the cafeteria every day, or you’ll want something in a hurry. There isn’t a university kid I knowflip flops who hasn’t eaten a can of soup at some point! Mom’s kitchen utensils aren’t nearby anymore, and a can/bottle opener is one utensil you’ll want to invest in for yourself.

4. A Whole Lot of Coins- Unless you’re lucky enough to have laundry provided for free, you’re going to have to pay each time you want to wash and dry your clothes. The last thing you want is to suddenly be out of clean undergarments without any coins on hand, and either make a mad dash to the bank or try to scrounge some off of your hallmates (money, not underwear!).

5. A Power Strip- Although most halls try to accommodate the student as best as possible, an abundance of power outlets typically just isn’t feasible. Therefore, you’ll definitely want a power strip in order to plug in your computer, printer, desk lamp, mini fridge, microwave, and even a hair dryer. Keep in mind that your roommate is going to have some of this gear too, so for both safety and convenience, you’ll want a power strip.

Well, there you have it. In my humble opinion, five absolute essentials that university students forget to pack. I’ve learned from experience-don’t leave these behind!
